What is shamisen bunkafu?
Bunkafu is a practical tablature system that tells a shamisen player which string and position to use while also recording rhythm and performance information.
A playing map rather than pitch-only notation
The three horizontal string rows represent the shamisen strings. Numbers identify positions along the neck, so the written symbol points directly to a physical action. The same written position can sound at a different pitch when the instrument uses another tuning.
Bunkafu also carries musical timing
Position numbers alone do not describe a performance. Durations, rests, ties, dots, triplets, repeats, and navigation marks show when notes happen and how phrases are organized.
Conventions are not completely uniform
Schools, publishers, and genres may differ in rhythm flags, technique marks, layout, and naming. ShamiTab supports Western Rhythm and Traditional Style, but a player should follow the conventions used by their teacher or ensemble.
